Bringing Swagelok to NAIT's Instrumentation Students

Not even a February blizzard can stop us from delivering pizza (and product demonstrations) to the Instrumentation students at NAIT

This year's social event was attended by over 200 students and faculty staff. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to enjoy a slice of pizza and see some great product demos from our Swagelok account managers! Until next year...

The beginning of the semester at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) can be heavily filled with new courses and training. So we at Edmonton Valve are there to lighten the mood with our annual social event for the Instrumentation students. And this year was our most successful year so far!

We are extremely proud of the working relationship that we have with the NAIT faculty in the Instrumentation program and have enjoyed carrying over that passion to the program’s students. We have had approx. 96 students through our Fitting & Bending training course so far this year (we had approx. 301 last year), and we like to reward their hard work with an enjoyable evening.

Up until last year, we hosted the social event at the Edmonton Valve office. “The goal is to engage the NAIT students and staff in a relaxed setting. This involves setting up stations where the students can learn what is new with Fluid System components; learn about new programs and services in the industry, and to share stories with experienced field personnel,” says account manager Chris Horne, who coordinates this event and training with NAIT, and is also a NAIT graduate from the business program.

Last year we changed up the venue and brought Edmonton Valve to the NAIT campus, allowing for more students to participate in the social event.  We were happy to see that the turnout this year had a higher turnout than last year, although the weather might have kept the students around longer.

“The 2015 social took place on an unusually blizzardy day this year, so students weren’t in so much of a rush to leave the building,” says Katie Dennis who helps Horne coordinate the event and is also a NAIT graduate. “If we were to have hosted it back at the Edmonton office on the other side of town, it might have been a social event just for us staff!”

Not only is there some great Swagelok swag when you sign in, but there are games, pizza, and beverages. But with all this fun we try not to lose focus on why we are there. These are both first and second year students and we are giving them an opportunity to speak with our industry experts, to answer their questions, and see first-hand what products they can expect to see and work with after they graduate.

“We are already looking forward to next year’s event and meeting the next line up of students in this program. We are honoured that we get to work so closely with NAIT and if we can help their students in any way prepare for what’s next in their careers, we will be there,” adds Horne. “It’s been great to see the success of this social event grow and be a part of the growing NAIT community.”
